Client : ETUDE HOUSE

My Lipbar

Is a lipstick testing machine that solves the chronic hygiene issue of lipstick testing. We empower people to mix and experiment, to find the best colour, with a beautifully satisfying interaction.

My Role

I pitched three retail innovation ideas to the client in April 2016. My lip bar idea took 15 months of development, and launched in the flagship ETUDE shop in Seoul in September 2017.

I managed the team, designed UX UI, hardware concept design and manage the manufacturing and guide the shop mangers about machine maintenance.

Mission

Create digital innovation in a retail store. Make an attractive retail space for shareable content on social media.

Problem

Consumers learn about beauty products through social media, rather than visiting retail stores for information. The time spent in retail stores has decreased.

Insight / Opportunity

Testing is the moment when a consumer makes the purchase decision.

The testing experience has chronic hygienic issues because only one tester stick is displayed per colour.

Project Scope

Concept design, physical, UX / UI design, production management.

Idea

Crystallization is the way to produce a perfect quality Lipstick. It is same as the tempering skill of chocolate making.

Technology Research

Discharging technology developed for medicine production and micro manufacture. It allows the delivery of a small, fixed quantity of a temperature controlled liquid.

System Architecture

Modular system allows the use of different lipstick cartridges.

Display - Visualise the concept and mood of the lipstick colour.

Handle - Send a signal to discharge a melted lipstick drop.

Dispenser - Connected with air pressure to deliver the correct amount .

Machine Design & UI Concept

I generated whimsical and interactive display ideas with various lipstick discharge animations to provide a theme to accompany each lipstick colour.

VR test

We used VR to test the dimension of machine and handle interaction.

The interior team share the 2D CAD data and we combined our 3D model in Unreal.

Machine Interaction

The machine contains molten lipstick 80 degrees celsius. It requires a protection window to keep the distance from user and the melted lipstick and nozzle. The information on the screen guides user to insert a plate on the right position intuitively.

MVP machine prototype

I managed to contract the battery manufacture factory in Korea to build the furst 12 prototypes and delivered to flagship store.

Information Screen UI & Interaction

The discharging and crystallisation process takes up to 8 seconds. Once the user pulls the handle, the user receives immediate feedback that the machine is working through the UI. The theme of the color and animation to engage the user whilst they wait.
